Hi – I’m Hetty!
I’m Hetty — a gardener and garden designer who left a corporate career in London to follow a quieter path. What began with a small patch of soil in Wandsworth led me to building gardens across the city, learning from incredible mentors, and eventually now designing with an award-winning studio.
Now based in the Oxfordshire countryside, I divide my time between garden design and writing Still Growing, a weekly newsletter about what the garden is teaching me — about patience, presence, and becoming.
From city to soil
For most of my twenties, I was working in a fast-paced corporate job in London. It was the kind of career that looked right on paper — but deep down, something felt off. I found myself craving quiet, connection, a slower pace and a different kind of purpose.
In our tiny garden in Wandsworth, I started growing things — badly, at first. But something clicked. I began spending more and more time outside. I started volunteering, then working at a local garden centre. I didn’t know where it was going, and I wasn’t earning much, but I felt more me than I ever had.
Eventually, I quit my job and decided to follow that quiet voice. It wasn’t easy. But I trusted that if I kept listening to myself, something meaningful would grow. And it did.

Gardening
My first hands-on gardening job was working on small residential gardens across South London. I learnt so much during that time — how to build gardens and how to work with plants. I was lucky to learn from Scott Melville, a brilliant plantsman who taught me the value of doing things properly — and with care.
I then moved to Oxfordshire to take on something completely different: working for Sarah Eberle (the most decorated Garden Designer in Chelsea Flower Show’s history) as a Section Head Gardener. It was a total shift in scale and style, and an incredible experience that deepened both my knowledge and my respect for the craft of garden design.

Becoming a Garden Designer
My first experience of Garden Design was helping Joe Perkins (Multiple RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medalist) one day a week for a short period of time. It was when I was just getting started and although I was inexperienced and knew very little, Joe graciously gave me a taste of what working in Garden Design was like. For which, I will be forever grateful for.
Fast forward to today, I now work as a Garden Designer for Butter Wakefield (House&Garden Top 50 Garden & Landscape Designers). Butter is an incredible mentor and I’m learning all the time from her and the amazing team.
So, that’s my story so far, a journey filled with ups and downs but ultimately leading to a destination that hopefully allows me to create, share, and help others.

The Newsletter — Still Growing
Alongside my design work, I also write a weekly newsletter called Still Growing — a gentle space where I share what my garden is teaching me about life, growth, and the slow art of becoming.
Each week, I send a letter with quotes, reflections, and personal stories — things I’m still learning, in the garden and in myself. It’s not a guide or a how-to. It’s a quiet invitation to pause, root in, and remember that we’re allowed to grow slowly.

Life from our Oxfordshire Cottage
In 2023, we moved to a small cottage in the Oxfordshire countryside with an overgrown garden full of potential. Since then, we’ve been slowly restoring it — clearing brambles, planting trees, and dreaming of the garden it could become. It’s been a grounding, joyful, and deeply personal project, and I share pieces of it here, along with glimpses of my work and our life. The best way to follow along is on my social channels below.
